Exploring Slovenia by motorhome

A few days off or the school holidays are a great chance to explore Slovenia. What better way to spend that time than to rent a motorhome and give your children an unforgettable experience?

A motorhome trip is a real adventure in itself, but with children on board it takes a little extra organisation and preparation. We can take care of the right “house on wheels” and some useful extras. All you have to decide is where to go. To make that part of your planning easier too, here are a few ideas.

5 destinations where you can explore Slovenia with your family

1. Exploring the Logar Valley – Camp Menina

Camp Menina is in the Savinja Valley, 800 m from the main Mozirje – Ljubno road in Rečica ob Savinji, on the left bank of the Savinja river. The campsite has 200 marked pitches, and next to reception there is a laundry and a motorhome service point. It is great fun for children too, with a large playground, an adventure park, a zip line, mini golf, a climbing wall and, in summer, an entertainment programme.

The campsite is open all year, and its location also makes it interesting for skiers: the Golte ski resort is only 4 km away. On summer days you can cool off in the Savinja river or swim in the lake inside the campsite.

The Savinja Valley is known for its many natural sights and countless sports activities (rafting, kayaking on the Savinja, canyoning, fishing, cycling …). We recommend a visit to the Logar Valley, the Matkov kot and Robanov kot valleys, the Rinka waterfall – the highest waterfall in Slovenia – and the Mozirski gaj botanical park …

2. The Nadiža river – Camp Nadiža

Camp Nadiža lies at the bottom of the valley in the small village of Podbela, 11 kilometres from Kobarid. It has about 150 marked pitches along the Nadiža river.

In summer the Nadiža gets warm enough for swimming. Children love jumping off the rocks into the small pools; the youngest enjoy the playground, and older children the basketball, volleyball, five-a-side football and table tennis courts and the bocce pitch.

We recommend a visit to Napoleon’s Bridge over the Nadiža, where you can also swim. You can also pop over to Kobarid to see the museum, the Kozjak waterfall and the First World War bunkers. The surrounding area offers many cycling routes and hiking trails.

3. The Kolpa river – Camp Bela krajina – Podzemelj

Camp Bela krajina – Podzemelj is set in beautiful countryside on the Kolpa river, just past the village of Podzemelj (on the Metlika – Črnomelj road). It is a smaller campsite with 20 marked motorhome pitches and about 70 tent pitches.

In summer the Kolpa warms up nicely and invites you to cool off. The campsite has a landscaped riverbank, part of it concreted, and a raft on the river. Children will find interesting play equipment, and the campsite also has an adventure park with two courses, one of them suitable for children over four. There are plenty of sports facilities too: beach volleyball, table tennis, mini golf, basketball, five-a-side football and e-bike rental for cycling trips in the area. For more active exploring, you can rent a SUP board or a canoe.

Guests can use the shared fireplace and picnic area.

4. Postojna Cave by train and Predjama Castle – Autocamp Pivka Jama

Autocamp Pivka jama is only 4 km from Postojna Cave, the world-famous karst gem, and just over 10 km from Predjama Castle, which is built into a high rock face.

The campsite takes up to 600 guests and has an outdoor swimming pool and a children’s pool, a tennis court, a basketball court and a beach volleyball court.

Children will surely be counting the minutes until they ride the little train into Postojna Cave, see the stalactites and stalagmites up close and learn about the fascinating life of the olm. The cave is open all year and has a constant temperature of 10°C. Afterwards you can go and explore the mighty Predjama Castle. The lovely surroundings also offer plenty of hiking, fishing, horse riding and short trips to nearby natural sights (Rakov Škocjan, Lake Cerknica …).

5. The heart of the Julian Alps – Camp Danica, Bohinjska Bistrica

Camp Danica lies right on the Sava Bohinjka river, close to the centre of Bohinjska Bistrica. It has about 200 pitches and is open all year. You will find a fun children’s playground, where various children’s workshops and events take place in summer. At the campsite you can play tennis, basketball and football, rent bikes and sign up for adventure sports. Next to the campsite there is also a multi-purpose sports hall for guests.

For a proper summer dip, head to Lake Bohinj. At Ribčev Laz you can rent canoes and SUP boards and explore hidden corners. In Bohinjska Bistrica you can also take some time to cool off and play in the rushing Sava Bohinjka. If the weather is bad, we recommend the nearby Bohinj Water Park – the children will love it.

Bohinjska Bistrica is an excellent starting point for hikes on the mountain trails of the Julian Alps, for a visit to the Savica waterfall and the source of the Sava Bohinjka, and for cycling trips.
