Travel story: a motorhome holiday

A family motorhome trip around Slovenia

One Saturday morning, an episode of Peppa Pig about a motorhome holiday reminded our youngest: “Mummy, mummy, when are we going on a motorhome holiday?” And he was truly thrilled when we soon had the chance to rent a motorhome.

When, where and which motorhome?

First we looked for suitable dates for our motorhome trip. During the summer holidays it is hard to match our days off work, so we decided to take our motorhome holiday before the season. We found a free weekend in May and quickly booked time off work and school. It turned out that a holiday outside the main season has huge advantages. The campsites are not so busy, so we did not need to book in advance, and prices are much lower than in the main season. When we asked ourselves “Where shall we go?”, we did not know what the coronavirus rules would be, so we decided to explore Slovenia. By motorhome from Tolmin along the Soča river to the sea.

When we chose a motorhome together with the children, there was a lot of choice: with a pop-up roof, with bunk beds, with forward- or rear-facing seats? On the po-avtodom.si website we found motorhomes that suited us. We chose the Benimar Amphitryon 997 and the Benimar Sport 346, as there were 10 of us travelling together. We were really happy with our choice, as there was enough room for everyone to settle in comfortably and enjoy the trip.

Our first motorhome drive, to Tolmin

At last the long-awaited Thursday came, and after work we went to Car Center Cerar in Radomlje to pick up the motorhomes. It was our first time renting a motorhome, so the pickup took a good hour, as we really had to go through every detail. The staff took plenty of time for us and explained and showed us everything carefully. The children listened with interest too, as they learnt how to open the windows, take down the table and make up the beds. We parked our cars safely, moved our things from the cars into the motorhomes, switched on the satnav and set off for Tolmin.

We drove via Idrija, which is very scenic, but for an easier drive we recommend the motorway. In the evening we arrived at Camp Siber in Tolmin, where we had a quick dinner, made up the beds and went to sleep. On Friday we woke up early to birdsong. Hunger got the better of us, so we made breakfast first.

The first item on our list was a visit to the Tolmin Gorges. We found a motorhome car park (you cannot park a motorhome at the entrance to the gorges) and walked along a beautiful footpath to the start of the trail. During the visit we read the information boards and took lots of photos.

We also wanted to see Javorca church, but as the road is not suitable for motorhomes, only two members of our group went on the hike, which took a good 3 hours. The rest of us preferred to stay at the campsite and play by the Tolminka river.

After dinner we went for a short walk to get some fresh air and then got the motorhome ready for the night. As showers were forecast, we packed away the tables, chairs and electric cables around the motorhome and closed the windows.

By motorhome from Most na Soči to Piran

On Saturday morning the sky was cloudy. We preferred to wait a little longer in the motorhomes and pass the time playing board games. We wanted to go to Kozlov rob, but the weather was rather changeable, and the forecast was not promising either.

After a late breakfast we decided to head for the sea instead. On the way we stopped at Most na Soči to see where the bungee jumps from the bridge take place. The children found the strong wind very exciting. We could hardly walk against it and had to take off our caps so that they did not blow away.

We decided to spend our last night with the motorhome at Camp Fiesa and visit the town of Piran. As there was no room at the campsite, we parked at the motorhome car park. We were already hungry, so we quickly made lunch. After a short rest on the beach we went to see Piran. In the evening the rain teased us again, but staying in the motorhome was very comfortable despite the bad weather. We fell asleep to the sound of raindrops.

On Sunday morning we saw the Piran town walls and had a quick swim in the sea (more like jumping into the waves). To avoid the crowds, we set off back to Radomlje in the early afternoon. On the way we also emptied the toilet and the waste water, and stopped for lunch.

A motorhome is a great choice for everyone

Our motorhome holiday was fantastic, even though the weather let us down a few times. We used the sunny days for time in nature, sightseeing and hikes, and when it rained we found shelter in our comfortable motorhome. The equipment is truly first-class, there is plenty of storage space, and despite its size the motorhome is easy to drive. Even though it was our first trip, the satnav helped us: we entered the size of the vehicle and it took us on roads that are suitable for such tall vehicles. It is important to find out in advance where you can empty the waste water and where there are suitable motorhome car parks.

The children loved the experience, which has encouraged us to go on a new motorhome adventure in another season.
