Travel report: a weekend trip by motorhome
A family motorhome trip to the Slovenian coast
Summer is over, the holidays were far too short, the tourist vouchers have been used up, and yet you long for at least a short break from everyday life. An escape into nature, to a milder climate, and above all a few wonderful moments with your loved ones.

Let me tell you about our short trip to the Slovenian coast, where we found out that renting a motorhome is a great idea for this kind of break out of season too.
By motorhome to Ankaran
Our family had wanted to get to know the Slovenian coast better for a long time. For the perfect adventure, we decided to rent a motorhome through the potnik.si portal. Most of their motorhomes are also suitable for winter conditions.
We picked up a Benimar Sport motorhome and, after a friendly walk-through of all the important functions – from the heating to using the toilet and switching on the water pump – we set off for the coast on Friday afternoon.
When we arrived at Camp Adria Ankaran, we could choose our own pitch – of course we picked one right by the sea. That is a big advantage of travelling out of season.

Once we had settled in, we made ourselves at home and could hardly believe how spacious and comfortable our model was. At the front, above the cab, there is a large bed where the children slept. They especially loved the roof window, which gave them a view of the beautiful starry sky. As we had filled the fridge before leaving and it was pleasantly warm inside the motorhome, we had no need to go out at all. We cooked dinner right there, played another round of cards and went to bed early, hoping to recharge our batteries for the next day.

The shell graveyard
And sure enough, the next day we were all awake before sunrise. We had plenty of time to let the fresh sea air into the motorhome, walk along the shore to the nearby piers and watch the sun come up. Then the obligatory breakfast with a morning coffee to the sound of the sea, and soon it was time to visit the shell graveyard, across Slovenia’s only coastal meadow and salt marsh.

Of course, we walked there from the campsite in Ankaran. The children loved discovering nature’s treasures, such as pine cones, special pebbles and beautiful seashells. Among them we also spotted fan mussels, a protected species in Slovenia.

Back to the campsite, a quick trip to the shop and then cooking a simple lunch while watching the children through the motorhome window as they built important structures knee-deep in the sea. Heavenly, just 3 metres from the sea – no hotel room can offer you that!

A bike ride to Debeli rtič
As we were travelling by motorhome, we could easily take all our bikes along. So in the afternoon we went on a bike ride around Debeli rtič, where we especially wanted to see “Rocky beach” and wait for the sunset. We never get tired of those. Thinking that we would otherwise be at home, looking at a grey, gloomy November sky, we were grateful to be here instead, catching a few rays of sunshine and some truly lovely moments by the sea.

After sunset we cycled back in the dusk to our “house on wheels”. The autumn days are short, but we were not ready for bed yet, so we made a tasty dinner and then played board games as a family. Still, we soon felt the long day catching up with us and sank into a peaceful sleep.
From Fiesa to Piran
Weekends are always short, and before we knew it, it was Sunday morning and time to leave Camp Adria in Ankaran. After a hearty breakfast, the obligatory morning session at the playground and a basic clean of ourselves, the dishes and the motorhome – the campsite has excellent facilities for this even out of season – we checked out and continued our trip.

Our route took us along the coast through Koper and Izola to Piran – more precisely, to the motorhome car park in Fiesa. After all, our rental motorhome was 6 m long and more than 3 m high, so it does deserve a slightly bigger parking space. From there we took the well-kept coastal path for a walk to Piran.

The path led us to St George’s Church, then on through the narrow streets of Piran to Tartini Square. The children were especially looking forward to visiting the aquarium and seeing amazing sea creatures up close, such as glowing jellyfish, colourful seahorses and lots of fish and crabs.

We were getting hungry, so we treated ourselves to a bite to eat at a nearby café. And the must-have treat of every seaside visit, whatever the season, is ice cream. Ice cream in hand, we strolled around the Piran headland, visited the Piran mermaid with the dolphin and, after climbing up to the little church, returned to our coastal path and along it back to the motorhome. Before leaving, we stopped at the playground right next to the car park, marvelled at a wonderful tree and watched the swans on Fiesa Lake.

As the wind had chilled us quite a bit, we were looking forward to the warm shelter of the motorhome and the rest of our trip. Before saying goodbye to the coast, we wanted one more panoramic view of the Adriatic Sea. We got it at the Pacug viewpoint. A few more photos as souvenirs, one last look at the sunset, and it was time to head back to Radomlje. Full of wonderful memories, we were ready to jump back into everyday life.
